VAUDEVILLE ON STEROIDS

In describing his stage act, Kevin James said, "It’s definitely something you don’t see everyday. We try to invent all of our own effects. We hope to be as different as possible."

On April 30th members of Ring 313 will witness the Bizarre World of Kevin James.

See why Kevin James had a command performance for Prince Albert of Monaco. See why David Copperfield has Kevin for a magic consultant. See why he has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and World’s Greatest Magicians. See why he’s so ‘hot’ in Las Vegas after appearing at Caesar’s World Magical Empire and in Splash and the Folies Bergere.

Get to the Irvine Ranch Water District well before the 7 p.m. start time because we are expecting a standing-room-only crowd. The Kevin James lecture is a closed meeting, which means it is open to Ring 313 members only!

By special arrangement with Orange County Magic Club, Ring 313 is proud to announce a special two-day event.

March Meeting

The talented Ring 313 Juniors stole the show at our March meeting. Headed by Junior Ring president, Sarah Stevenson, they proved that the future of magic is bright in the hands of these creative young performers. First up was Sarah Stevenson who charmed the group with a beautifully choreographed dancing cane, egg manipulation and multiple dove production performed to piano melodies played by Ginny Robbins. By the way, Sarah is a very busy young magician, the next stop for her is a performance at this year’s "Women In Magic Conference" in Los Angeles.

Next up was Magic Max (aka, Max Papazian) who displayed theatrics well beyond his years in a stunning act that featured driving rock music, dove productions, a dove penetration through solid glass, fire effects and a fabulous 20th Century silk routine. Watch out Mr. Copperfield!

Close-up magic was the bill-of-faire for the remainder of the evening and the Juniors were up to the challenge. Matthew Jarman performed Aldo Colombini’s "Paramount" much to the delight of everyone. Next up was Matthew’s brother, Alex Jarman, who proceeded to stun the group with a deceptive appearing and disappearing coin routine courtesy of master magician Jim Swoger. The influence of Michael Ammar was evident in Jonathan DeLima’s solid performance of "Chicago Opener" and "Dr. Daley’s Last Trick." Dai Vernon would have been proud of all of you.

Then it was the adults’ turn to shine…and shine they did. Leading off was our club’s standout mental magician, Ken Klein, who performed a card discovery a la Max Maven. New member Kevin Hutchinson took center stage and showed great promise with a multiple card location that was a fine first outing. Club favorite Philip Henderson presented Daryl’s "Jumping Knot of Pakistan" that was so clean and entertaining that he has prompted many of us to review the way we perform this astounding effect. Rounding out our show was Tom Clifford’s rendition of J.C. Wagner’s "Queens Debate" presented to music using a ‘showgirls of magic’ storyline. After that fancy finger flickin’, he finished with the deceptively easy, but mind-blowing "Grandpa’s Deck."

At the conclusion of the performances we had a workshop on card magic conducted by top cardicians, Jerry Fohrman and Michael "The Hat" Van Horn. This was an evening of wonderful magic, fun and sharing, thanks to all the participants.

Thank You Eugene Burger

Eugene Burger presented one of the most insightful and informative lectures last week. He has expanded our perception of what magic can be.

Just prior to the I.B.M. convention, we plan to get you in the mood for some great stage magic with a lecture by the extremely popular Victor & Diamond. Reserve June 25th for a special treat!

Ring 313 Juniors

A warm thanks to several top magical performers in the world for sharing your magic with our young people. Dale Salwak shared invaluable performance principles at the February meeting, Dana Daniels presented a lecture on creativity at the March meeting and Johnny Ace Palmer conducted a workshop on impromptu card tricks in April. Thank you to these wonderful performers for giving of their valuable time to the development of our talented young people. You are gentlemen in the greatest traditions of magic.

Become Active in the I.B.M.

The I.B.M. activities at the International level are still mainly run by a volunteer organization. A new Volunteer Committee with Robbie Willmarth as its chair has been added to find those members willing to give their time and talents to help the I.B.M. improve and grow. Please obtain a form at the next meeting and send it to Robbie Willmarth, indicating how you are willing to assist in the upcoming activities of the I.B.M.
