Servo, Mr. Mysto & Carney too!

After an incredibly magic filled 1997,

how does Ring 313 set the tone for 1998? The answer is simple. Invite one of the most creative and talented performers in the country to present a lecture. We are proud to announce that John Carney will do just that on Thursday, January 29 at the Irvine Ranch Water District at 7 p.m.

John Carney’s credits are too numerous to mention here, but you probably saw him in last year’s magically stunning MasterCard commercial or on CBS’s Magician’s Favorite Magicians. He has been named Magic Castle Magician of the Year and has performed at Caesar’s Palace, The Ice House, The Improvisation and many other popular clubs. Last month John was featured on the cover of Magic magazine for his role in a new production of Maskelyne’s "Will, the Witch & the Watch" at the Los Angeles Conference on Magic History. John is a master of sleight-of-hand, a prolific writer (Mystery Science Theater 3000), teacher and performer. If you ever get a chance to see his alter ego, Mr. Mysto, perform—DO NOT MISS IT! Several of us were lucky enough to catch Mr. Mysto’s performance at the Castle this month.

Paid members of Ring 313 will receive their 1998 membership cards at the door. All others will be charged $15 for admittance.

If you are unable to attend, you are not out of luck. John will also present a lecture to O.C.M.C. on February 18th.

Lee Earle Lecture

I know what you are thinking! When are we going to have a world class mentalist lecture for Ring 313? You’re not going to believe this, but our February guest will be the editor of SYZYGY, world renowned mentalist, Lee Earle.

SYZYGY (pronounced Sizz’-uh-jee) is currently the leading publication in the field of Mentalism and mental magic. Lee Earle has handpicked the best material from the pages of the past year’s issues and has added value and seasoning with his unique perspective on presentation and performance. Learn to perform the kind of Mentalism today’s audiences demand.

December Meeting

There was more going on at the December meeting of Ring 313 than you could shake a magic wand at! The festivities began with the presentation of awards for the 1997 Conjurer’s Competition. In the next segment we enjoyed some particularly entertaining new member performances. Gerry Jaffe, Jon Sparlin, Philip Henderson, Howard Adams and Dan McKinon used clever routining and interesting presentations to delight the audience.

The next portion of the evening featured a sensational Dealers Show. Participants included J.P. Jackson, Dick Barry, Bill Pearce, Chris Smith and John Fedko.

You can really work up an appetite with so much activity. Thank goodness we also had a "Finger Food and Dessert Pot Luck" going on at the same time. We had three six-foot tables full of tasty food! What a great night to usher in the holidays.

Did Ya know that…

Hearts and diamonds on playing cards used aboard U.S. submarines during WWII were printed in black. Couldn’t use red—it was invisible in the interior red lighting of the subs. (Oil and water routines must have been really confusing.)
